(First Sunday in Lent) "Life in the Wilderness" Luke 4:1-13 Before Jesus began His 3-year ministry, He was led by the Holy Spirit into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil. This happened so that Jesus could officially overcome all temptation on our behalf. Satan came to Jesus near the end of those 40 days because that was when Jesus would have been at His weakest after having fasted for the entire time. Satan is an opportunist. He watches us to see when we are at our weakest, and He tempts us with the thing that we are most vulnerable to. the main thing that enables us to resist Satan's temptation is the Word of God, which is what Jesus relied upon as well.
